Egypt - Continued - Wed, 10 Mar 2004 15:06 +0000
Something I forgot to mention about Egypt is that there are X-Ray machines and metal detectors (like at airports - the ones you have to walk through, not the ones you use to find rusty Coke cans at the beach with) everywhere. I think it must be a response to the 1997 Luxor Massacre. You certainly feel safe, anyway. There are a lot of police in tourist areas, and all hotels have metal detectors in. The Egyptian Musem in Cairo requires you to walk through 2 metal detectors and put your bags through 2 X-Ray machines before you can get in. I think they're pretty serious about security now!
