Rome - New Year Trip - Fri, 4 January 2005 08:50 +0000
Popped to Rome for New Year. I've been about 4 times now, but it's a nice place, and there's loads to see and do, oh, and it was
fairly cheap considering the time of year, so we went anyway.
We flew over on Alitalia which was pleasant enough - loads of leg room. Two hours later (oh, plus a 1 hour delay for some unexplained reason),
we arrived at Rome's Fiumicino airport. After the usual pleasantries, we got the train into the city and then walked to our hotel to dump our stuff.
Most of the time was spent wandering around the usual sights - pictures of which you can see in the Rome gallery. The main reason for going was
New Years Eve. We booked a meal in a restaurant for it. It was about 10 courses for 100 Euros, with wine and bubbly all thrown in which seemed pretty
standard. It kicked off at 8:30 and lasted til midnight. Course after course kept getting brought out, with things like oysters, swordfish, pasta with
wild boar etc. etc. etc. ending with a light cake for dessert.
And with every course came a different glass of wine. Red, white, red, white, sparkling. Come midnight, things were getting
a bit blurry! However, just before 12 o'clock, they put a bottle of bubbly on everybody's table. *Groan* no more! We were absolutely full by this point,
and certainly didn't need any more booze, but I suppose you've got to have bubbly for New Year! So come midnight, we dutifully popped the cork and had
some bubbly. We were just about to back to the hotel, when they started bringing out another course! It was some sort of speciality they do for new year,
with lentils and sausage. Very tasty, but only managed a mouthful or two.
Needless to say, then we went back to the hotel and had some kip.
The next day, it was time to go home already. The flight back was a bit rubbish. We were flying into Heathrow, and as is often the case there, you have to
circle in the stack for ages before you can land coz it's just so busy. And we had to circle at cloud height into the bargain, so it was bumping
around like mad, which was quite unpleasant.
Oh, and it was quite warm and sunny all the time we were there, too. Very nice!
